A Note From Our President

Dear Relatives and Friends of the Alphonse Gerwing Charitable Foundation,
I want to wish you a blessed and peace-filled Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2020. As we enter a new year it is time again to give a progress report on the Foundation.
Our Foundation is currently supporting two projects in north-east Brazil that Al was instrumental in forming and funding. These projects are:
- The School of Family Agriculture, and
- Supporting Rural Women in Northeast Brazil.
The School of Family Agriculture provides local students with skills needed for vegetable and fruit gardening in this arid area and for raising pigs, poultry, goats and bees. It helps local farmewrs to improve their knowledge of cultivation using irrigation techniques and enables them to become more self-sufficient.
As described in the NEXUS (Rainbow of Hope for Children Newsletter), the Rural Women's Improvement projects purpose is "to awaken in women, a sense of self-worth and confidence in order to empower them with an equal voice in decisions affecting their lives. Programs include income generation through agricultural production, crafts and entrepreneurship as well as providing counseling, literacy, and training in women's rights, conflict resolution and public speaking."
As you know, there are many continuing needs in the projects that Al started. I encourage each of you to consider becoming part of the Foundation. Your donation adds to the principal value of the Foundation. The earnings are used to fund projects each year so all contributons continue to "give" year after year. If you are interested in making a donation please go to the "Donation" section on this website.
It has been a pretty quiet year at the Foundation in 2019. The highlightsa include:
- At the Lake Lenore High School graduation this spring, the Al Gerwing Fine Arts Award was presented to Alison Gerwing, daughter of Jim and Karen Gerwing and granddaughter of Julie Gerwing. She will be studying Computer 3D Animation at Kelowna College. Congratulations Alison!
- The Foundation's investment portfolio had another solid year. For 2019 we will be distributing $25,000 to Al's causes. Also we will be sending $4700 to Connie Gerwing's Kinyambu project in Kenya. This is the amount that was donated specifically for rthis project. Thank you to Ted, our invaluable secretery-treasurer for overseeing our investment portfolio.
- We still have copies of "No ordinary Man" and "Joining the Street People" available. You can find them on the Foundation Website under "Al's Store".
Once again, best wishes to each of you. Thank you for your support of Al's Foundation. I encourage you to consider the Alphonse Gerwing Charitable Foundation as one of your 'charities of choice' for this coming year.

Steve Buttinger, Chairperson
